For nearly an hour at PayPal Park on Wednesday night, Austin FC looked capable of pulling off a valuable road result. Then San Jose Earthquakes detonated.

Trailing at the interval after Joseph Rosales fired Austin in front in the 9th minute, the Earthquakes produced a relentless second-half response, scoring five times after the break to storm to a 5-1 victory in Major League Soccer. It was a comeback built on territorial dominance, wave after wave of pressure, and a ruthless final stretch that turned a tense fixture into a rout.

Austin made the sharper start and took the lead early when Rosales struck in the 9th minute, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage that they carried into halftime. San Jose had plenty of the ball even before the break, but the final touch was missing and Austin’s resistance held through the opening 45 minutes.

The pattern of the match only intensified after halftime. San Jose pinned Austin deep, controlled possession, and kept forcing the issue in the attacking third. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 58th minute when Jack Jasinski rose to head home the equalizer, a goal that shifted the energy inside the stadium and opened the door for the flood that followed.

Once level, the Earthquakes never let up. Timo Werner put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot in the 78th minute, converting calmly to make it 2-1 after Austin had spent much of the second half defending its own box. From there, San Jose smelled blood.

Preston Judd added the third in the 83rd minute to give the Earthquakes breathing room, and just two minutes later Ousseni Bouda made it 4-1 in the 85th minute as Austin’s shape completely unraveled. Judd then returned in the 88th minute with his second goal of the night, this time a header, capping an extraordinary late barrage and underlining just how dominant San Jose had become.

The underlying numbers told the same story as the final scoreline. San Jose finished with 68.9 percent possession, an overwhelming 37 total shots, and 16 efforts on target, while also earning 14 corners. Austin, by contrast, managed only five shots and put just two on target. For long stretches, especially in the second half, the pitch tilted almost entirely toward the visitors’ penalty area.

There was frustration in Austin’s performance as well, reflected in 21 fouls committed and a yellow card for Rosales in the 71st minute. San Jose also had cautions for Earl Edwards in first-half stoppage time, Reid Roberts in the 54th minute, and Jasinski in the 68th minute, but those moments barely registered by full time as the home side’s attacking display took over the narrative.

This result continues the Earthquakes’ excellent run of form and showcased both patience and cutting edge. They had to absorb the frustration of going behind early, but rather than panic, San Jose trusted its structure, kept moving Austin around, and eventually broke the match wide open. A five-goal second half is the kind of statement performance that resonates well beyond one night.

For Austin FC, the early lead will make this defeat even harder to digest. The visitors were in a strong position at halftime, yet they could not cope with the sustained pressure after the restart and collapsed under the weight of San Jose’s momentum.
