Real Salt Lake turned America First Field into a first-half showcase on Saturday night, overwhelming San Diego FC 4-2 in a lively Major League Soccer fixture in Sandy, Utah.

The hosts were electric from the opening whistle and had the match under control almost immediately. Diego Luna opened the scoring in the 4th minute, setting the tone for a blistering start, and Sergi Solans doubled the advantage in the 6th minute with a header as Real Salt Lake carved through San Diego far too easily in the early exchanges.

San Diego FC did manage to steady themselves and found a route back into the contest through Marcus Ingvartsen in the 14th minute, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and briefly giving the away side hope. But any sense of momentum was short-lived as Real Salt Lake continued to find space in dangerous areas and kept asking questions of the San Diego back line.

Solans struck again in the 37th minute, once more with a header, to restore the hosts’ two-goal cushion, and Morgan Guilavogui added another in the 45th minute to cap a devastating first-half display. By the interval, Real Salt Lake were 4-1 in front and fully deserved it after producing four goals from 16 shots overall, including nine efforts on target.

San Diego saw more of the ball across the night, finishing with 51.9 percent possession and earning eight corners, but they were chasing the match after that chaotic opening period. Their second goal arrived in the 66th minute when Anders Dreyer converted a penalty for the visitors, trimming the margin to 4-2 and giving San Diego a sliver of belief for the final stretch.

Even so, Real Salt Lake managed the closing stages well enough to see out the win. The home side were clinical in front of goal and far sharper in the decisive moments, while San Diego were left to rue the defensive lapses that effectively decided the fixture before halftime.

The result pushes Real Salt Lake to 5-1-1 and continues an impressive run of form, while San Diego FC drop to 3-2-3 after another difficult outing. On a night when the visitors had spells of possession, it was Real Salt Lake’s cutting edge that made all the difference.

Goal scorers: Diego Luna 4′, Sergi Solans 6′, 37′, Marcus Ingvartsen 14′, Morgan Guilavogui 45′, Anders Dreyer 66′ (penalty).
