Michelle Cooper delivered the decisive moment as Kansas City Current defeated Angel City FC 1–0 after extra time at CPKC Stadium on Saturday, November 7, advancing to the 2026 National Women’s Soccer League semifinals.
After a goalless 90 minutes, Cooper converted a penalty in the 96th minute to break the deadlock. It proved the only goal of a quarterfinal in which Kansas City held the statistical edge but needed extra time to turn that advantage into a place in the last four.
No breakthrough in regulation
Neither side found the net before halftime, and the second half also finished goalless. Angel City kept the hosts at bay throughout regulation, taking the knockout fixture beyond 90 minutes with the teams still level at 0–0.
The visitors collected three bookings during regulation: Sveindís Jónsdóttir in the 13th minute, Ary Borges in the 58th and Maiara Niehues in the 12th minute of second-half stoppage time. Yet the decisive breakthrough remained elusive for both teams until the first period of extra time.
Cooper makes the difference from the spot
Six minutes into extra time, Cooper converted from the penalty spot to put Kansas City ahead. With the margin finally established, the Current protected their lead through the remainder of the first extra-time period and a goalless second period.
Temwa Chawinga received a yellow card in the 114th minute, but there was no late equalizer for Angel City. Kansas City finished with a clean sheet and the narrow victory required to keep their postseason campaign alive.
Current’s greater attacking output pays off
Across the full match, Kansas City registered 59.6% possession and 20 shots, with six on target. Angel City had 12 attempts, two on target, while edging the corner count 10–9.
Those figures underline the hosts’ greater attacking output, but the slender margin reflected how long Angel City resisted. Ultimately, Cooper’s 96th-minute penalty separated the sides: Kansas City move on to the semifinals, while Angel City’s playoff run ends after 120 minutes.
