Sunderland made the decisive moment count as Enzo Le Fée’s 36th-minute penalty secured a 1–0 Premier League victory over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.
Chelsea enjoyed 68.7% possession and registered four shots on target, but could not find the goal needed to rescue a draw. Sunderland, operating with considerably less of the ball, protected their first-half advantage through a goalless second period and seven minutes of added time.
Le Fée delivers the breakthrough
The defining passage arrived shortly before half-time. Chelsea defender Levi Colwill was booked in the 35th minute, before Le Fée converted from the penalty spot a minute later to put Sunderland ahead. His 36th-minute goal proved the only one of the afternoon.
That breakthrough gave the hosts something tangible to defend heading into the interval. For Chelsea, the task was to translate their command of possession into a response against opponents who had seized their opportunity.
Chelsea’s possession brings no reward
The final statistics highlighted the difference between controlling the ball and deciding a fixture. Despite Chelsea’s substantial possession advantage, the visitors finished with only a narrow edge in attempts: 10 shots to Sunderland’s nine. Chelsea put four on target, compared with two from the hosts, while both sides won two corners.
Sunderland’s clean sheet was therefore just as important as their penalty. Chelsea had more of the ball and more efforts on target, but neither advantage altered the result.
The second half also brought a succession of bookings. Sunderland’s Thomas Meunier and Brian Brobbey were cautioned in the 50th and 53rd minutes respectively, followed by Chelsea’s Pedro Neto in the 55th. Moisés Caicedo entered the referee’s book in the 76th minute as the visitors continued their search for an equaliser.
Sunderland see the job through
The closing stages brought further disciplinary interruptions, with Luke O’Nien booked in the 90th minute, Wesley Fofana in the second minute of added time and Nilson Angulo in the fourth. Sunderland nevertheless kept their lead intact until the final whistle.
For the hosts, this was a victory built on taking the decisive chance and ensuring Chelsea had no answer. For the visitors, it was a frustrating reminder that possession alone offers no guarantee of points.
Both clubs return to Premier League action on Saturday, November 21. Sunderland face Aston Villa, while Chelsea take on Leeds United, with both fixtures scheduled for 7:00 AM PST.
