San Jose Earthquakes made an explosive start count on Saturday, October 31, securing a 2-1 MLS victory over Real Salt Lake at PayPal Park. Ousseni Bouda’s second-minute free-kick goal and Benjamin Kikanovic’s 17th-minute strike gave the hosts an early cushion, enough to withstand Juan Manuel Sanabria’s headed reply in the 23rd minute.

Three goals in a lively opening

Bouda wasted little time putting San Jose ahead, finding the net from a free kick in the second minute to give the home side an immediate foothold in this Western Conference fixture. Kikanovic then doubled the advantage in the 17th minute, leaving Real Salt Lake with a two-goal deficit before the opening quarter of the match was complete.

The visitors responded quickly. Sanabria headed home in the 23rd minute, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and bringing Real Salt Lake firmly back into contention. After three goals inside the opening 23 minutes, however, neither side would find the net again.

Earthquakes protect their advantage

San Jose took their narrow lead into halftime and preserved it throughout a goalless second half. Real Salt Lake finished with 56.3 percent possession and a slight edge in total attempts, registering 16 shots to the Earthquakes’ 15. Both teams put five efforts on target and earned five corners, underlining how closely contested the fixture remained beyond its decisive opening spell.

The second half also brought bookings for San Jose’s Reid Roberts in the 46th minute and Niko Tsakiris in the 60th, followed by Real Salt Lake’s Philip Quinton in the 63rd. Alexandros Katranis was cautioned six minutes into stoppage time as the visitors’ pursuit of an equalizer ultimately fell short.

For San Jose, the difference was their early finishing. Real Salt Lake had more of the ball and remained within one goal for much of the afternoon, but the Earthquakes ensured that their two-goal burst delivered all three points.
