Toronto FC left it late to complete their comeback at BMO Field on Wednesday, with Josh Sargent’s 86th-minute winner securing a 2–1 Major League Soccer victory over D.C. United.
Andre Dozzell had put the visitors ahead in the 29th minute, giving D.C. a lead they carried into halftime. Jonathan Osorio restored parity in the 64th minute before Sargent delivered the decisive goal four minutes from the end of regulation.
Dozzell gives D.C. the halftime advantage
Dozzell’s 29th-minute opener handed D.C. the early advantage in this Eastern Conference fixture. Toronto went into the interval trailing 1–0, leaving the hosts needing a second-half response.
The match also brought a steady accumulation of cautions. Toronto’s Niklas Dorsch was booked in the 33rd minute, while Dániel Sallói and D.C.’s Kye Rowles both received yellow cards in the 50th. Further bookings followed for the visitors’ Kimito Nono in the 58th minute and Jared Stroud in the 60th.
Osorio levels before Sargent settles it
Osorio supplied Toronto’s breakthrough in the 64th minute, bringing the hosts level at 1–1 and setting up a finely balanced closing stretch.
A draw remained on the table until Sargent struck in the 86th minute. His late intervention turned one point into three for Toronto, who saw out the remaining minutes and stoppage time to complete the turnaround.
Clinical finishing makes the difference
Toronto finished with 60.9% possession, but their efficiency in front of goal proved decisive: both of their two shots on target produced goals. The hosts attempted nine shots overall, compared with D.C.’s 10.
D.C. also registered two shots on target and earned seven corners to Toronto’s five. Those numbers underline how narrow the margins were, with the visitors unable to turn their halftime advantage into a result.
For Toronto, the story was a second-half recovery capped by a timely finish. Osorio’s 64th-minute equalizer reopened the contest; Sargent’s 86th-minute winner settled it.
