Marie Müller delivered the decisive goal in the 60th minute as Portland Thorns FC edged North Carolina Courage 1–0 at Providence Park on Friday, October 23, in front of 20,105 supporters.
The Thorns made their attacking opportunities count in an NWSL fixture that offered a clear reminder: possession alone does not decide a match. North Carolina controlled 62.8 percent of the ball, but Portland finished with seven shots on target to the visitors’ two.
A goalless first half
Neither side found a breakthrough before the interval, leaving the contest level at 0–0. Müller received a yellow card in the 27th minute, the only booking of the opening half.
The Courage’s greater share of possession ultimately brought little reward in front of goal. Across the full match, they registered 11 attempts and won eight corners, but Portland proved more accurate with their shooting despite spending considerably less time on the ball.
Müller makes the difference
After North Carolina’s Bia was booked in the 55th minute, Müller supplied the pivotal moment five minutes later. Her 60th-minute goal broke the deadlock and gave the home side a lead they would not relinquish.
Portland finished with 12 shots and five corners, with their seven efforts on target underlining the threat they carried on a night when they had just 37.2 percent possession.
North Carolina could not find an equalizer, and Riley Jackson’s 79th-minute booking completed the disciplinary tally. The Thorns protected their advantage through five minutes of second-half stoppage time to secure the clean sheet and all three points.
What comes next
Both clubs return to action on Sunday, November 1, at 2:00 PM PST. Portland face Houston Dash, while North Carolina take on Denver Summit FC.
For the Thorns, this was a victory built on making the decisive attacking moment count. For the Courage, the frustration was clear: plenty of the ball, but no goal to show for it.
