Utah Royals left Houston with all three points on Saturday night, with Mina Tanaka’s 69th-minute goal securing a disciplined 1-0 National Women’s Soccer League victory over the Houston Dash at Shell Energy Stadium.
The opening half was short on clear chances, but Utah gradually established control through possession and sustained pressure. The Royals finished with 54.8 percent of the ball, seven corners and 17 shots, consistently asking questions of a Houston side that struggled to turn its defensive work into attacking momentum.
Houston held firm through the first 45 minutes, keeping the fixture level at 0-0 at the interval. But the Dash were forced into an increasingly physical second-half display, with Avery Patterson booked in the 52nd minute and Danielle Colaprico following into the book six minutes later.
Utah’s breakthrough arrived in the 69th minute. Tanaka found the decisive finish to reward the visitors’ pressure and give the Royals a lead their overall attacking output had merited. It was the midfielder’s goal that separated the sides after Utah had already created a substantial advantage in attempts, recording six shots on target to Houston’s none.
The Dash pushed to find a late response, but their final-third issues remained. Houston registered only four shots across the match and failed to test the Utah goalkeeper on target. Paige Nielsen’s 88th-minute yellow card reflected the home side’s frustration as the Royals managed the closing stages and saw out the clean sheet.
The result moves Utah Royals to a 13-3-8 record, while Houston Dash drop to 7-5-12. Houston return to action on Sunday, September 20, against Boston Legacy FC, while Utah host Angel City FC later that day.
