Real Madrid turned a narrow half-time advantage into an emphatic 4–1 victory over RB Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday, October 21, strengthening their UEFA Champions League league-phase campaign with a commanding home display.

Bernardo Silva broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute before Arda Güler doubled Madrid’s lead in the 52nd. A frantic finish then brought goals from Kylian Mbappé in the 83rd minute, Leipzig substitute Tidiam Gomis in the 85th and Madrid substitute Yan Diomande in the 87th.

Madrid find the breakthrough before half-time

Leipzig remained level until two minutes before the interval, when Silva’s 43rd-minute opener gave the hosts a valuable breakthrough. Madrid went into the dressing room 1–0 ahead, with the visitors still firmly in the fixture.

That position became considerably more difficult for Leipzig shortly after the restart. Güler’s 52nd-minute goal made it 2–0, giving Madrid breathing room and leaving the visitors facing a demanding route back.

Three late goals cap a decisive victory

Mbappé extended the advantage to 3–0 in the 83rd minute, effectively settling the contest. Gomis pulled one back for Leipzig in the 85th minute, denying Madrid a clean sheet, but any satisfaction for the visitors was short-lived.

Diomande supplied the final flourish with an 87th-minute volley, restoring the three-goal cushion and completing a burst of three goals in five minutes.

The numbers underline Madrid’s control

Madrid finished with 64.3% possession and 18 attempts, including 11 on target. Their seven corners to Leipzig’s one further reflected the balance of attacking pressure.

Leipzig registered 11 attempts and six on target themselves, but could not match the hosts’ cutting edge. Their late consolation offered little comfort on a night when Madrid found four different goalscorers and took all three points in convincing fashion.
