LA Galaxy made the decisive moments count on Wednesday, October 14, claiming a 2–0 Major League Soccer victory over Portland Timbers at Dignity Health Sports Park. Marco Reus opened the scoring in the 17th minute before Justin Haak’s 80th-minute header gave the hosts breathing room late on.

Portland finished with more possession and more attempts, but Galaxy were sharper where it mattered: five of their nine shots were on target, compared with three from the visitors’ 12.

Reus gives Galaxy the advantage

Reus supplied the breakthrough after 17 minutes, putting Galaxy ahead and leaving Portland chasing an equalizer for much of the evening.

The hosts carried that 1–0 advantage into the interval, although their first half also brought yellow cards for Pablo Ruiz in the 29th minute and Sergi Roberto in the 31st. Portland defender Jimer Fory followed them into the referee’s book in the 38th minute.

Haak’s header settles the contest

Haak was booked in the 47th minute, while Portland’s Kristoffer Velde received a yellow card in the 62nd. With only one goal separating the sides, the possibility of a draw remained alive deep into the second half.

That changed in the 80th minute, when Haak headed home Galaxy’s second goal. His contribution at the attacking end established a two-goal cushion with ten minutes of regulation time remaining. Portland’s David Da Costa was subsequently booked in the 82nd minute.

The Timbers held 54 percent possession and won five corners to Galaxy’s two, but those advantages did not produce a goal. Galaxy protected their clean sheet through four minutes of added time to complete the victory.

Decisive finishing makes the difference

This was a reminder that having more of the ball does not necessarily mean carrying the greater threat. Portland led the overall shot count 12–9, yet Galaxy put more efforts on target and supplied both goals through Reus in the 17th minute and Haak in the 80th.

Both clubs return to MLS action on Saturday, October 17. Galaxy face San Diego FC, while Portland take on Colorado Rapids, with both fixtures scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PDT.
