Kansas City Current 4-1 Denver Summit FC
Haley Hopkins delivered a devastating second-half hat trick as Kansas City Current surged to a 4-1 National Women’s Soccer League victory over Denver Summit FC at CPKC Stadium on Saturday.
Denver made the brighter start and took a 13th-minute lead through Lindsey Heaps, rewarding their early control with the opening goal. The visitors held 60.6% possession across the match, but Kansas City were far more ruthless in the decisive areas and consistently found ways to turn pressure into chances.
The Current drew level in the 39th minute when Hopkins found the net, sending the sides into half-time locked at 1-1. It was a pivotal response from the hosts, who had been tested by Denver’s patient possession but carried a growing threat in transition and from set-piece situations.
Hopkins wasted no time taking command after the interval. The forward struck again in the 47th minute to put Kansas City ahead, then completed her hat trick in the 57th minute as the Current turned a balanced first half into a convincing home performance.
Temwa Chawinga added the finishing touch in the 76th minute, making it 4-1 and sealing a result that reflected Kansas City’s clinical edge. The Current finished with 21 shots, nine on target and nine corners, compared with Denver’s seven shots and three efforts on target.
Denver will be frustrated that an encouraging opening and a substantial share of the ball produced only Heaps’ 13th-minute goal. Kansas City, meanwhile, showed the cutting edge that possession alone cannot guarantee, with Hopkins’ treble the defining story of the afternoon.
The Current next face Washington Spirit on October 25, while Denver Summit FC return to action against Chicago Stars FC on October 4.
