Gotham FC turned sustained control into a convincing 3-1 National Women’s Soccer League victory over Chicago Stars FC on Friday night at Red Bull Arena, with Jaedyn Shaw scoring twice and Sam Kerr adding a second-half header.
Shaw set the tone almost immediately. The attacking midfielder gave Gotham the lead in the ninth minute, rewarding the home side’s assertive start and sending the 9,176 in Harrison into celebration. Gotham carried that 1-0 advantage into half-time after largely dictating the rhythm of the match.
The hosts found another gear after the interval. Kerr doubled the lead in the 50th minute, rising to power home a header and give Gotham valuable breathing room. Shaw then put the result beyond serious doubt in the 66th minute, completing her brace as Gotham’s attacking pressure again paid off.
Chicago continued to battle and found a late consolation through Tessa Dellarose in the 87th minute, but there was no late turnaround. Gotham had already built a decisive three-goal cushion through their territorial dominance and sharper finishing.
The numbers reflected Gotham’s authority: they held 71.6 percent possession, outshot Chicago 16-6 and put seven efforts on target to the visitors’ one. Gotham also created 13 shot assists and earned three corners, while Chicago were unable to force a corner throughout the match.
The victory leaves Gotham FC with another strong home result as they prepare to host Angel City FC on Sunday, October 4. Chicago Stars FC will look to respond when they face Denver Summit FC later that day.
