Brighton & Hove Albion swept to an emphatic 5-0 Premier League victory over Coventry City at the Coventry Building Society Arena, turning a controlled first-half lead into a punishing afternoon for the home side.
Charalambos Kostoulas gave Brighton the breakthrough in the 35th minute, ensuring the visitors took a deserved 1-0 advantage into the interval after dominating the ball and dictating the rhythm of the match.
Coventry needed a strong response after the restart, but Brighton quickly removed any prospect of a comeback. Malick Yalcouyé doubled the lead in the 51st minute before the hosts were reduced to 10 men when Taiwo Awoniyi was shown a red card two minutes later.
With the numerical advantage and control of possession firmly in their favour, Brighton continued to press. Pascal Gross converted from the penalty spot in the 70th minute to make it 3-0, before captain Lewis Dunk added a fourth in the 83rd minute. Yasin Ayari completed the rout in the fourth minute of added time.
The statistics underlined Brighton’s authority: they held 69.4% possession, registered 22 shots and put seven efforts on target. Coventry did create 14 shots and tested the goalkeeper six times, but could not find the clinical edge required to threaten a comeback.
The result leaves Brighton with a 2-1-1 league record and plenty of momentum ahead of next Saturday’s fixture against Arsenal. Coventry, now 0-0-4, will look to regroup quickly when Nottingham Forest visit next weekend.
