Sporting Kansas City 3-1 LAFC
Sporting Kansas City delivered a sharp, clinical performance at Sporting Park on Saturday, September 12, defeating LAFC 3-1 in Major League Soccer. André Luiz opened the scoring in the 18th minute, Taylor Calheira doubled the advantage with a header in the 31st, and substitute Jacob Bartlett settled the fixture in the 71st minute after Denis Bouanga had briefly pulled LAFC back into contention.
The home side made its early pressure count when André Luiz struck in the 18th minute. LAFC responded with more of the ball and ultimately finished with 57.6 percent possession, but Sporting Kansas City remained dangerous whenever it advanced into the final third.
Calheira gave Sporting a deserved cushion in the 31st minute, rising to head home and send the hosts into half-time with a 2-0 lead. Kwaku Agyabeng was booked shortly before the interval, while LAFC’s Sergi Palencia had also gone into the book in the 19th minute.
LAFC began the second half with renewed purpose, and Bouanga reduced the deficit just two minutes after the restart, scoring in the 47th minute to make it 2-1. The visitors pushed for an equaliser and amassed 13 corners, but Sporting Kansas City stood firm despite facing 21 total shots.
The decisive moment arrived in the 71st minute. Bartlett, introduced from the bench, restored Sporting’s two-goal advantage and removed the doubt from an increasingly tense match. Sporting matched LAFC’s eight shots on target while producing 20 efforts of its own, underlining the attacking threat that made the difference.
Yevhen Cheberko was cautioned for LAFC in the 80th minute and Sporting’s Calvin Harris followed into the referee’s notebook in the 82nd, but the hosts managed the closing stages effectively to secure all three points.
Sporting Kansas City next host Philadelphia Union on Saturday, September 19. LAFC will look to respond away to San Jose Earthquakes on the same day.
