PSV Eindhoven recovered from a frustrating first half to claim a deserved 1-1 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk in their UEFA Champions League league-phase fixture at Philips Stadion.

Gleiker Mendoza gave Shakhtar a precious lead in first-half stoppage time, scoring in the 45+1st minute to silence the home crowd. But PSV responded immediately after the interval, with Sergiño Dest finding the equaliser in the 48th minute and ensuring the points were shared in Eindhoven.

Mendoza delivers before the break

The contest was finely balanced throughout, with PSV enjoying a slight edge in possession at 53.6 per cent and attempting 10 shots to Shakhtar’s eight. Neither side created a decisive advantage for much of the opening period, though the intensity was clear in a physical midfield battle.

Shakhtar broke through at the ideal moment. Mendoza struck in the 45+1st minute to put the visitors 1-0 ahead at half-time, after PSV had been unable to turn their territorial control into a breakthrough.

Dest sparks PSV response

PSV’s answer came just three minutes after the restart. Dest drove the home side level in the 48th minute, turning the momentum sharply back towards the Dutch hosts and giving the Philips Stadion crowd the response it wanted.

The equaliser set up a competitive second half, but the fixture grew increasingly stop-start. Both sides finished with three corners, while PSV registered two shots on target from 10 attempts and Shakhtar matched that total of two on target from eight shots.

Discipline became a factor as Shakhtar collected six yellow cards, including cautions for Vinicius Augusto, Mendoza, Pedrinho, Valeriy Bondar, Dmytro Kryskiv and Marlon Gomes. PSV had three players booked: Armando Obispo, Ruben van Bommel and goalscorer Dest.

Points shared in Eindhoven

Neither side could find a late winner, and the final whistle confirmed a legitimate draw after a tight, hard-fought European night. PSV will take encouragement from their swift second-half reaction, while Shakhtar leave Eindhoven with a valuable point after standing firm under sustained spells of home possession.
