Fenerbahce opened their UEFA Champions League league-phase campaign with a hard-earned 1-1 draw against AS Roma at Ulker Stadyumu on Thursday, responding immediately after half-time through Archie Brown to cancel out Bryan Cristante’s opener.
Roma had enjoyed the greater share of possession in Istanbul, finishing with 58.4%, but Fenerbahce carried a sharper threat in the final third and registered five shots on target from 11 attempts. The home side’s resilience ensured the points were shared in a competitive European fixture that never lacked edge.
Cristante gives Roma the interval advantage
The visitors made their control count in the 39th minute when Bryan Cristante scored to put Roma 1-0 ahead. It was a significant breakthrough in a first half in which Roma saw more of the ball, while Fenerbahce looked to remain compact and create openings without dominating possession.
Roma went into the break with the lead, but the contest swung almost instantly after the restart. Devyne Rensch was booked in the 47th minute, and Fenerbahce soon found the response their home support demanded.
Brown delivers instant response
Archie Brown equalised in the 48th minute, bringing Fenerbahce level just three minutes into the second half. The left-back’s goal transformed the atmosphere at Ulker Stadyumu and gave the Turkish side momentum in a match being closely followed as part of the opening Champions League slate.
Brown’s influential evening also carried a caution, with the scorer booked in the 51st minute. Fenerbahce continued to press their case and ultimately produced more efforts on target than Roma, 5-3, despite having only 41.6% possession.
A physical finish in Istanbul
The closing stages reflected the intensity of the occasion. Fenerbahce’s Kerem Akturkoglu and Mert Muldur were shown yellow cards in the 69th and 71st minutes respectively, before Ismail Yuksek was booked in the 84th. Cristante, Roma’s goalscorer, also entered the book in the 86th minute.
Neither side could find a late winner, and the draw was a legitimate reward for Fenerbahce’s second-half response as well as Roma’s composed first-half display. Roma finished with three corners to Fenerbahce’s one, but the hosts’ five shots on target underlined their improved attacking purpose after the interval.
For Fenerbahce, Brown’s 48th-minute equaliser provided an encouraging early Champions League moment. For Roma, Cristante’s 39th-minute goal earned a point away from home, though the visitors will know they were unable to make their possession advantage decisive.
