Everton 2-2 Manchester United delivered a breathless finish at Hill Dickinson Stadium, where Ainsley Maitland-Niles struck in the sixth minute of stoppage time to secure a deserved Premier League point for the hosts.

After a goalless and increasingly combative first half, the match exploded into life after the interval. Manchester United took the lead through Bryan Mbeumo in the 46th minute, only for Everton to rally late through Tyrique George in the 83rd minute. Benjamin Sesko appeared to have won it for United with an 88th-minute header, but Maitland-Niles had the final word at 90+6′.

United strike first after goalless opening

The first half ended 0-0, with Everton’s Harrison Armstrong and Brennan Johnson booked as the home side battled to disrupt United’s rhythm. Manchester United had more of the ball across the match, finishing with 54.6 per cent possession, but Everton carried a persistent threat and ultimately created the greater volume of attempts.

Mbeumo broke the deadlock immediately after the restart, scoring in the 46th minute to give the visitors a crucial foothold. United looked set to manage the contest from there, although Everton continued to push numbers forward and test the visiting defence.

Everton refuse to fold

Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Diogo Dalot were all shown yellow cards as United came under greater pressure, while Everton’s Merlin Röhl was also cautioned in a tense second half. The home side’s persistence was rewarded in the 83rd minute when Tyrique George levelled the match.

There was another dramatic swing five minutes later. Substitute Benjamin Sesko restored Manchester United’s advantage in the 88th minute, powering home a header to make it 2-1 and seemingly settle a wild finish.

Everton were not done. Deep into added time, substitute Ainsley Maitland-Niles found the decisive final intervention, scoring at 90+6′ to make it 2-2 and send Hill Dickinson Stadium into celebration.

Numbers tell the story

Everton finished with 18 shots and six on target, compared with Manchester United’s 14 attempts and three on target. United’s possession advantage did not translate into control when it mattered most, while Everton’s attacking intent and late resilience ensured the points were shared.

The draw leaves Everton with a 1-2-0 league record, while Manchester United move to 1-1-1. Everton next face Tottenham Hotspur on September 12, while Manchester United have a Manchester derby against Manchester City on September 13.
