Brighton & Hove Albion overcame a second-half red card to secure a 2–0 Premier League victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, October 10. Maxim De Cuyper broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute, before Jaouen Hadjam sealed the points in the third minute of stoppage time.

Pascal Struijk’s dismissal in the 57th minute left the visitors defending their advantage with ten men for more than half an hour. But Sunderland could not turn their numerical advantage and greater share of possession into an equaliser, and Brighton left with a clean sheet in front of 47,196 spectators.

De Cuyper breaks the deadlock

The sides went into the interval level at 0–0, with neither finding a breakthrough. Olivier Boscagli’s yellow card in the 36th minute was the first notable disciplinary incident before a second half that changed the complexion of the fixture.

De Cuyper put Brighton ahead in the 53rd minute, giving the visitors the opening they needed. Just four minutes later, however, Struijk was shown a red card, handing Sunderland an opportunity to recover.

Brighton stand firm with ten men

Sunderland finished with 62.4% possession and seven corners to Brighton’s five, but their attacking output did not bring a goal. The hosts registered 12 shots, with only three on target, as the visitors protected their narrow lead.

Despite spending much of the second half a player short, Brighton finished with 13 shots and four on target. Their ability to retain an attacking threat proved decisive when Hadjam, listed among the substitutes, struck in the 90+3rd minute to make it 2–0 and put the result beyond Sunderland.

The contrast was clear: Sunderland had more of the ball, but Brighton made their opportunities count. For the hosts, failing to find an equaliser against ten men will be the central frustration; for the visitors, holding firm and then adding a second goal made this a particularly satisfying away victory.

What comes next?

Sunderland next face AFC Bournemouth on Sunday, October 18, while Brighton turn their attention to a rivalry fixture against Crystal Palace on the same day. Both fixtures are scheduled for 6:00 AM PDT.
