Philadelphia Union broke through after half-time and powered to a composed 2-0 MLS victory over CF Montréal at Subaru Park on Saturday night.
After a scoreless first half in Chester, the Union found the decisive edge in the 57th minute. Danley Jean Jacques opened the scoring, giving the home side the breakthrough their pressure had been building toward.
Philadelphia carried that momentum into the final stages and put the result beyond doubt in the 75th minute, when Cavan Sullivan added the second goal. The Union were deserving winners on the balance of the match, producing 19 shots and putting eight on target while restricting Montréal to five attempts and only two efforts on frame.
The match had its share of physicality, with Philadelphia committing 15 fouls and Montréal eight. Jovan Lukic, Bruno Damiani, Kai Wagner and Jesús Bueno were booked for the Union, while Hennadii Synchuk, Samuel Piette, Dawid Bugaj and Victor Loturi saw yellow for Montréal.
Philadelphia also held a slight possession advantage at 50.9 percent and earned six corners to Montréal’s one, underlining a controlled all-round display once Jean Jacques had broken the deadlock.
The result moves the Union’s record to 7-6-10, while CF Montréal fall to 5-6-12. Philadelphia return to action on Wednesday, September 9, against FC Cincinnati, while Montréal host Charlotte FC on the same night.
