Charlotte FC and Houston Dynamo FC played out a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday, with the hosts unable to turn a late one-man advantage into a decisive goal.
There were no goal scorers in the match as both defences and goalkeepers preserved clean sheets. Houston controlled much of the ball, finishing with 65.5% possession and outshooting Charlotte 18-9, while also placing five efforts on target to Charlotte’s three. But the Dynamo could not find the final touch required to convert their territorial control into a winning goal.
The fixture carried an edge from the opening stages. Houston defender Felipe Andrade was booked in the eighth minute, while Charlotte’s Tim Ream saw yellow in first-half stoppage time. Djibril Diani was cautioned four minutes after the restart as the midfield contest continued to tighten.
The pivotal disciplinary moment arrived in the 71st minute. Charlotte midfielder Ashley Westwood was booked and then sent off, leaving the home side to navigate the closing stages with 10 players. Houston had already collected a yellow card for Agustín Resch in the 66th minute, while Artur was booked in the 78th and Guilherme Augusto in stoppage time as Charlotte resisted the pressure.
Charlotte did create a useful stream of set-piece opportunities, winning eight corners to Houston’s six, but neither side found a breakthrough across seven minutes of added time. The result is a legitimate point apiece: Charlotte move on from a demanding defensive display, while Houston will feel they left a potential victory on the pitch after generating 17 shot assists.
Charlotte FC return to action on Wednesday, September 9, against CF Montréal. Houston Dynamo FC are also back in MLS action that day, hosting Real Salt Lake.
