Kansas City Current 3-2 North Carolina Courage — Kansas City Current survived a late North Carolina Courage surge to secure a pulsating 3-2 National Women’s Soccer League victory at CPKC Stadium on Saturday.

The Current established control with a ruthless first-half spell, turning an early break into a three-goal advantage before the Courage mounted a spirited response. In front of 11,500 supporters in Kansas City, the hosts ultimately had enough defensive resolve to see out the result.

Current strike three times before the break

Kansas City took the lead in the 12th minute when North Carolina defender Natalia Staude turned the ball into her own net. The Current capitalised on that opening and doubled their advantage in the 35th minute through Croix Bethune.

The hosts then appeared to be in complete command when Michelle Cooper made it 3-0 in the 41st minute. Cooper was later booked in the 55th minute as the match became more combative after the interval.

North Carolina gave themselves a lifeline deep into first-half stoppage time. Evelyn Ijeh struck in the 45+3rd minute, cutting the deficit to 3-1 heading into the interval and ensuring the second half would carry real tension.

Courage push, but Current stand firm

The Courage had more of the ball throughout the match, finishing with 56.9 percent possession and 18 shots to Kansas City’s 13. They continued to press after the restart and were rewarded in the 77th minute, when Riley Jackson converted a penalty to make it 3-2.

That set up a nervy final phase, with Kansas City forced to protect a one-goal margin against a Courage side that registered eight shots on target. But the Current held their shape and preserved the points, despite North Carolina’s sustained pressure.

Kansas City were efficient with their opportunities, putting nine of 13 attempts on target, while both teams won four corners. The Current next face Bay FC on Friday, September 4, while North Carolina Courage return to action against Chicago Stars FC on Sunday, September 6.
