Orlando Pride earned a resilient 1-0 National Women’s Soccer League victory over Washington Spirit at Audi Field on Sunday, with Haley McCutcheon’s third-minute goal proving decisive.
McCutcheon gave the visitors a dream start, striking in the 3rd minute to put Orlando ahead before Washington could settle into the fixture. It was the only goal of a tense, increasingly one-sided contest in terms of territory and pressure.
The Spirit responded strongly and spent much of the afternoon camped in Orlando territory. Washington finished with 72.7% possession, 23 shots and 11 corners, underlining the scale of its push for an equaliser. But the home side could put only three efforts on target, while Orlando’s defensive structure held firm through a lengthy second half and 12 minutes of added time.
Orlando were far less dominant on the ball, recording 27.3% possession and 10 shots, but they were clinical when the opening arrived. The Pride also kept their discipline under sustained pressure, although Barbra Banda was booked in the 70th minute. Washington substitute Gabrielle Carle received a yellow card in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
The match was 1-0 to Orlando at half-time, and the second period followed the same pattern: Washington probing and pressing, Orlando protecting its narrow advantage. The Pride did not add to their lead, but they did not need to as McCutcheon’s early intervention stood up as the match-winner.
The result moves Orlando Pride forward with a hard-earned away win, while Washington Spirit will rue an afternoon in which possession, corners and shot volume did not translate into a goal.
Washington return to action against Bay FC on Sunday, August 30. Orlando face Utah Royals on Saturday, August 29.
