Denver Summit FC produced a stunning late finish to defeat Utah Royals 2-1 at Centennial Stadium on Saturday night, with Janine Sonis converting a free kick in the 90+4th minute to settle a gripping NWSL fixture.
After a goalless first half, Denver found the breakthrough six minutes after the restart. Yazmeen Ryan put the home side ahead in the 51st minute, rewarding a Summit performance that created consistent pressure from set pieces and finished with eight corners.
Utah had more of the ball, holding 52.8 percent possession, and registered 18 shots to Denver’s 12. The Royals also looked set to steal a point when substitute Tatumn Milazzo struck in the 89th minute, cancelling out Ryan’s opener and setting up a frantic finish.
But Denver responded immediately. Sonis stepped up in stoppage time and delivered from a free kick in the 90+4th minute, restoring the hosts’ lead with the final decisive moment of the match.
The Summit were clinical when it mattered, putting six of their 12 attempts on target compared with Utah’s three from 18 shots. The result moves Denver Summit FC’s record to 6-5-7, while Utah Royals fall to 10-3-6.
