Washington Spirit found the breakthrough just after the hour and made it stand up, defeating Denver Summit FC 1-0 at Audi Field in Sunday’s National Women’s Soccer League fixture.

After a first half that finished scoreless, the Spirit gradually took firmer control and were rewarded in the 61st minute when Sofia Cantore (61′) delivered the only goal of the night. It was the key moment in a match that often felt finely balanced, even if Washington carried a slight edge in possession and a much sharper touch in front of goal.

The opening 45 minutes were tight and competitive, with Denver showing they were prepared to make this a difficult night for the home side. The visitors generated volume in attack over the course of the evening, finishing with 17 shots and five corners, but they struggled to truly test the Washington back line, putting only one effort on target.

Washington, by contrast, were more efficient in the decisive areas. The Spirit ended with 52.9 percent possession, 13 total shots and six efforts on target, and that cutting edge ultimately separated the sides. Cantore’s finish in the 61st minute gave the home crowd of 15,169 the breakthrough they had been waiting for and shifted the pressure squarely onto Denver for the final half-hour.

Denver attempted to respond with more direct attacking phases and a willingness to push bodies forward, but Washington managed the closing stages well. The visitors’ frustration showed in the disciplinary column, with Ayo Oke (55′), Eva Gaetino (79′) and Natalie Means (88′) all going into the book as they chased an equaliser.

There was still plenty of tension late on, especially through 10 minutes of added time, but the Spirit stayed organized out of possession and protected their slender advantage through to full time. It was the kind of professional home performance managers value: not always spectacular, but controlled when it mattered most.

The result lifts Washington Spirit to 10-3-3 on the season and extends their strong recent form, while Denver Summit FC fall to 5-4-6 after a night in which their shot count suggested promise but their lack of precision in the final third proved costly.

In the end, one well-taken goal from Sofia Cantore (61′) was enough. For Washington Spirit, that was all they needed.
