Charlotte FC looked set for a statement home victory on Wednesday night, only for Atlanta United FC to fight back from two goals down and claim a 2-2 draw in Major League Soccer at Bank of America Stadium.
The hosts were sharp and aggressive from the outset, turning early pressure into a deserved opener in the 16th minute when Kerwin Vargas (16′) found the breakthrough. Charlotte continued to play on the front foot, stretching Atlanta and asking repeated questions in the final third.
That pressure paid off again right before the interval. In the 45th minute, Liel Abada (45′) doubled the advantage with a header, sending Charlotte into halftime with a commanding 2-0 lead and full control of the fixture.
But Atlanta emerged from the break with far more urgency and a clear response. The visitors pulled one back in the 57th minute through Elías Baez (57′), whose header shifted the momentum and gave Atlanta belief. From there, the match opened up, with the visitors pushing higher and Charlotte increasingly forced to defend their penalty area.
The equalizer arrived in the 76th minute, and it came from a familiar source. Miguel Almirón (76′) brought Atlanta level, completing the comeback and silencing a crowd that had watched Charlotte control so much of the first half.
There was still plenty of tension in a lengthy stoppage time period, with the match ultimately stretching to 90’+11′. Charlotte finished with more of the ball, edging possession at 51.1 percent to 48.9 percent, and also carried the greater attacking volume with 23 total shots to Atlanta's 12, plus a 9-6 advantage in shots on target. They also won more corners, 6-3. Yet despite those numbers, they could not find the decisive third goal.
Atlanta, meanwhile, deserve credit for the resilience of their second-half display. After a difficult first 45 minutes, they adjusted well, competed harder in the duels, and made their pressure count in front of goal. Yellow cards for Will Reilly (22′), Alexey Miranchuk (48′), Nathan Byrne (79′), and Tomás Jacob (90’+10′) underlined the edge in a fiercely contested MLS fixture.
In the end, both sides had a half to remember and a half to regret. Charlotte will feel this was an opportunity missed after establishing a two-goal cushion, while Atlanta can take genuine encouragement from a comeback point on the road. A 2-2 draw was a fair reflection of a match that swung dramatically from one half to the next.
