Inter Miami CF did the damage before the interval and saw out the second half with authority, beating the Portland Timbers 2-0 on Sunday night at Nu Stadium in Major League Soccer.
The hosts were clinical when the key moments arrived. Lionel Messi broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, giving Inter Miami a deserved breakthrough after a lively opening spell. Just 11 minutes later, Germán Berterame doubled the advantage in the 42nd minute, capping a sharp first-half display that left Portland chasing the fixture.
By halftime, Inter Miami held a 2-0 lead, and that cushion proved decisive. Portland did enjoy more of the ball over the full 90 minutes, finishing with 54.8 percent possession, but Inter Miami carried the greater threat in the final third. The home side produced 22 shots and put 9 on target, compared to Portland’s 16 efforts and 4 on target.
That contrast told the story of the match. Even without adding to the scoreline after the break, Inter Miami remained the more dangerous side, winning eight corners and continuing to stretch Portland’s back line. The Timbers searched for a route back into the contest, but they could not find the final touch needed to unsettle the hosts.
The second half became more about control than chaos. Rodrigo De Paul went into the book in the 41st minute for Inter Miami, while Telasco Segovia was cautioned in the 58th. For Portland, David Da Costa saw yellow in the 65th minute and Finn Surman was booked deep into stoppage time at 90’+2′. But there was no shift in momentum substantial enough to alter the outcome.
For Inter Miami, this was a professional home result built on first-half sharpness and attacking quality. Messi’s goal in the 31st minute set the tone, and Berterame’s finish in the 42nd minute gave the side full control. From there, the hosts managed the fixture well and collected another three points in front of their own supporters.
Portland will look at the possession numbers and feel they had enough of the ball to make this more competitive, but Inter Miami were cleaner, more direct, and far more efficient in the decisive areas of the pitch. In the end, the first-half burst was enough to settle it.
