Houston Dash came out on top of one of the most chaotic fixtures of the early National Women’s Soccer League season on Friday night, holding off Racing Louisville FC for a dramatic 4-3 win at Shell Energy Stadium.
In front of 5,442 fans in Houston, this was a match that never truly settled. It had three penalties, a brace at either end, a furious second half swing, and one final stoppage-time twist before the Dash finally saw it out. When the final whistle arrived, Houston had the points, but Racing Louisville had pushed them all the way.
The hosts struck first in the 23rd minute when Taylor Flint coolly converted from the penalty spot to give Houston Dash a 1-0 lead. Racing Louisville FC responded before the break, and they did so the same way, with Kat Rader burying a penalty in the 39th minute to make it 1-1.
That level first half gave way to a breathless restart. Houston reclaimed the advantage in the 48th minute through Sarah Weber, whose finish put the home side 2-1 ahead and briefly gave the Dash control. That control lasted all of two minutes. Kiki Van Zanten answered immediately for Racing Louisville FC in the 50th minute, restoring parity at 2-2 and shifting the momentum back toward the visitors.
Louisville then turned the match on its head in the 67th minute, and again it was Van Zanten. Her second goal of the night completed the turnaround and put Racing Louisville FC 3-2 in front, capping a clinical spell from a side that made far more of its openings despite seeing less of the ball for stretches.
Houston, though, had created pressure all night. The Dash finished with 24 shots to Louisville’s eight, put five efforts on target, and won five corners. That attacking volume eventually told in the closing stages. In the 81st minute, Flint stepped up once more from the penalty spot and converted her second of the evening, bringing Houston level at 3-3 and injecting life back into the home crowd.
From there, the Dash found the winner to complete the comeback and seal a 4-3 result, capping a second half in which the home side did just enough to overturn Louisville’s advantage. Even then, there was still late drama left. Racing Louisville FC earned a penalty deep into stoppage time, and Sarah Puntigam converted in the 90+9th minute to cut the deficit and set up a nervy finish, but Houston held on through 90+15 to secure the victory.
Flint’s two penalties at 23′ and 81′ were central to the result, while Weber’s 48th-minute goal proved equally important in a match decided by the finest of margins. For Louisville, Van Zanten was the standout in open play with goals in the 50th and 67th minutes, and Rader’s 39th-minute penalty plus Puntigam’s 90+9′ spot kick kept the visitors alive until the end.
There was no shortage of edge, either. Paige Nielsen saw yellow for Racing Louisville FC late in the first half, while Macey Hodge and Katie O’Kane were booked for Houston in the second. Louisville also picked up late cautions as the tension rose in the final stretch.
The result moves Houston Dash to 2-0-1 on the young season, while Racing Louisville FC drop to 0-1-2 after a spirited but ultimately painful night on the road. For neutral supporters, this was everything the league can offer: pace, transition football, penalty-box chaos, and a finish that kept everyone guessing until the last whistle.
For Houston, it was a statement in resilience. For Louisville, it was a reminder that even an excellent attacking night can still end empty-handed when a fixture becomes this open. Either way, Friday night in Texas delivered one of the NWSL’s most entertaining matches of the season so far.
