Utah Royals 2-1 North Carolina Courage
Cece Delzer’s 65th-minute goal lifted Utah Royals to a hard-fought 2-1 National Women’s Soccer League victory over North Carolina Courage at America First Field on Sunday.
In front of 5,572 supporters in Sandy, Utah, the Royals made their chances count despite North Carolina carrying a narrow edge in both possession and shot volume. Utah finished with seven attempts and two on target, but both efforts on frame found the net in an efficient home performance.
The Royals struck first in the 17th minute when Cloé Lacasse rose to head home and give the hosts an early advantage. North Carolina responded before the interval, however, as Ashley Sanchez converted from the penalty spot in the 37th minute to send the sides into half-time level at 1-1.
The Courage pressed with 11 shots, six of them on target, and won four corners to Utah’s two. But the Royals’ defensive structure held firm through a tense second half, even as the home side collected late cautions and had to protect a one-goal margin.
That margin arrived in the 65th minute. Cece Delzer found the decisive goal, restoring Utah’s lead and giving the home supporters a finish to celebrate. North Carolina could not force an equaliser in the closing stages, despite their territorial pressure and six shots on target.
The result moves Utah’s record to 14-3-9, while the Courage sit at 12-3-11. Utah next host Seattle Reign FC on October 23, while North Carolina face Seattle Reign FC on October 2.
