San Diego FC turned a level first half into a commanding home victory on Saturday night, dispatching the Colorado Rapids 3-0 at Snapdragon Stadium in Major League Soccer.

Onni Valakari opened the scoring in the 27th minute before Elias Achouri doubled the advantage eight minutes later, giving San Diego a deserved 2-0 lead at the interval. Gabriel Pirani then put the result beyond doubt with a 71st-minute finish as the hosts completed an efficient, composed performance.

San Diego strike twice before the break

The Rapids matched San Diego’s 50 percent share of possession and actually attempted more shots, nine to six, but the home side were more ruthless in the decisive areas. San Diego placed four of their six attempts on target and converted three of them, while Colorado managed only two efforts on frame.

Valakari broke the deadlock in the 27th minute, giving San Diego the breakthrough their home supporters wanted. Achouri followed in the 35th minute, and the two-goal cushion changed the rhythm of the match heading into half-time.

Colorado sought a route back after the restart, but San Diego kept their defensive structure intact and denied the visitors the clear opening needed to build momentum. Reggie Cannon was booked in the 58th minute as the Rapids’ frustrations began to show.

Pirani seals a polished display

San Diego made the points safe in the 71st minute when Pirani added the third goal. It was the finishing touch on a disciplined display in which the hosts took their chances and protected their advantage without allowing Colorado back into contention.

The Rapids finished with three yellow cards, with Keegan Rosenberry cautioned in the 89th minute and Alex Harris booked in second-half stoppage time. Colorado also committed 21 fouls to San Diego’s 13, underlining a difficult night for the visitors.

The result leaves San Diego FC with a 7-6-8 league record, while Colorado Rapids fall to 9-1-11. San Diego next host LA Galaxy on Saturday, August 29, while Colorado return home to face Real Salt Lake on the same day.
