Red Bull New York 1-1 Chicago Fire FC — Cameron Harper’s 85th-minute header earned Red Bull New York a deserved late point against Chicago Fire FC in an evenly contested MLS fixture at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night.
Chicago had taken a 38th-minute lead through Maren Haile-Selassie and appeared set to leave Harrison with all three points. But New York stayed in the contest, continued to test the Fire defence and found their breakthrough five minutes from time through substitute Harper.
Chicago strike first
The visitors carried a narrow edge in possession, finishing with 51.8 percent of the ball, and made their first-half control count when Haile-Selassie struck in the 38th minute. The goal gave Chicago a 1-0 interval advantage, while New York faced a second-half chase on home turf.
The match remained competitive rather than one-sided. Both teams committed 10 fouls, with Chicago’s Leonardo Barroso booked in the 17th minute before Fire defender Joel Waterman saw yellow in the 64th. Chicago substitute Mohammed Sofo was also cautioned two minutes later.
Harper delivers late
New York pressed with greater urgency after the break and ultimately found the leveller in the 85th minute. Harper, introduced from the bench, rose to head home and bring the hosts level at 1-1.
The statistics reflected the fine margins. Red Bull New York registered six shots on target from 11 attempts, compared with Chicago’s five on target from 10 shots. Chicago created 10 shot assists to New York’s eight, while the hosts held a 3-2 advantage in corners.
There was no further breakthrough in stoppage time, and the points were shared after a hard-fought contest. The draw leaves Chicago Fire FC with an 11-3-6 record, while Red Bull New York move to 7-5-9.
