Toluca produced a devastating second-half display on Wednesday night, sweeping aside LAFC 4-0 at Estadio Nemesio Díez in the second leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal and advancing 5-2 on aggregate.
For 45 minutes, the fixture remained finely balanced. LAFC managed to keep the hosts off the scoresheet before the interval, but Toluca were already imposing themselves, moving the ball with authority and pinning the visitors back for long stretches. The numbers told the story of growing pressure: Toluca finished with 64.3 percent possession, 31 total shots and 15 efforts on target, while LAFC managed just five shots and only one on frame.
The breakthrough arrived four minutes into the second half. Helinho converted from the penalty spot in the 49th minute, calmly sending home the opener to ignite the home crowd and tilt the semifinal firmly in Toluca’s direction.
Once in front, Toluca did not let up. Everardo López doubled the lead in the 58th minute, capping another wave of attacking pressure and leaving LAFC with an increasingly steep climb back into the tie.
Any lingering hope for the MLS side faded as the match wore on. Ryan Porteous, who had already been booked in the 38th minute, was sent off in the 86th, reducing LAFC to 10 men for the closing stages. From there, Toluca smelled blood.
Paulinho added a third in second-half stoppage time at 90’+2′, putting the result beyond all doubt, before striking again at 90’+4′ to complete the rout and add extra gloss to an already emphatic night for the Liga MX side.
The contrast between the two teams was stark by full time. Toluca were sharper in possession, more aggressive in the final third and relentless in transition after the break. LAFC, by comparison, never found the rhythm or attacking thrust needed to threaten a comeback and were ultimately overwhelmed by the tempo and volume of Toluca’s pressure.
It was a scoreless first half, but the second half belonged entirely to Toluca: Helinho from the spot in the 49th minute, Everardo López in the 58th, and Paulinho twice in stoppage time at 90’+2′ and 90’+4′. A 4-0 result on the night, and a 5-2 aggregate victory overall, sends Toluca into the Concacaf Champions Cup final in emphatic fashion.
