D.C. United delivered an efficient and disciplined road performance on Sunday, beating New York City FC 2-0 at Citi Field in Major League Soccer. Louis Munteanu proved the difference, opening the scoring in the 29th minute before calmly converting a penalty in the 75th to wrap up all three points for the visitors.
For long stretches, NYCFC controlled the ball and tried to pin D.C. United back. The home side finished with 72.7 percent possession and won six corners, but that territorial advantage rarely translated into real cutting edge in front of goal. D.C. United, by contrast, looked sharper and more direct whenever they broke forward, ending the night with 19 shots and seven efforts on target.
The breakthrough arrived just before the half-hour mark. After weathering early pressure, D.C. United found the opening they wanted and Munteanu struck in the 29th minute to put the away side 1-0 up. It shifted the rhythm of the fixture, forcing NYCFC to chase the match while D.C. United settled into a compact shape and looked dangerous on the counter.
There was a combative edge to the first half as well. Keisuke Kurokawa went into the book for D.C. United in the 26th minute, and Silvan Hefti was shown a yellow card in first-half stoppage time at 45+3′. But despite NYCFC seeing more of the ball, D.C. United took their lead into the interval fully intact, with the halftime score reading 1-0 to the visitors.
After the restart, NYCFC pushed for a response, but D.C. United remained organized and increasingly threatening whenever spaces opened up. João Peglow picked up a yellow card in the 70th minute as the away side continued to battle through a tense second half, and the decisive second goal soon followed.
In the 75th minute, Munteanu stepped up from the penalty spot and made no mistake, firing home his second goal of the evening to double D.C. United’s advantage. It was a clinical finish and effectively put the fixture beyond NYCFC, who struggled to find the breakthrough their possession promised.
Nicolás Fernández was booked for NYCFC in the 80th minute as frustration grew for the home side, while Jacob Murrell also saw yellow deep into stoppage time at 90+3′. By then, D.C. United were firmly in control of the result, seeing out the closing stages with authority to complete an excellent away performance.
The final numbers underlined the story of the night. NYCFC had nine shots and four on target but could not solve D.C. United’s resistance. The visitors, despite having just 27.3 percent possession, were far more productive in the final third and made their chances count. Munteanu’s goals in the 29th and 75th minutes gave D.C. United a deserved 2-0 victory and a valuable MLS road result.
