LA Galaxy left it late, but Marco Reus proved the difference in a hard-fought 2-1 Major League Soccer win over Real Salt Lake on Sunday at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson.
Reus opened the scoring in the 9th minute, bending home from a free-kick to give the Galaxy an early lift. It was a moment of quality in a lively start, and it set the tone for a home side that looked dangerous whenever Reus found space in advanced areas.
Real Salt Lake responded well and gradually took control of more of the ball, finishing the night with 60.7 percent possession and forcing the Galaxy to defend for long stretches. Their pressure paid off in first-half stoppage time, though with a huge slice of fortune. In the 45’+4′ minute, an own goal credited to JT Marcinkowski dragged the visitors level, sending the sides into the interval at 1-1.
The second half became increasingly tense, with both teams trading fouls, cautions and half-chances rather than sustained attacking rhythm. LA Galaxy finished with 16 shots and seven on target, while Real Salt Lake posted 15 attempts and eight on target, underlining just how competitive the fixture was despite the narrow margin.
As the match moved into its final stages, it felt like one decisive moment would settle it. That moment arrived in the 85th minute, when the Galaxy were awarded a penalty and Reus stepped up with composure. The German converted from the spot for his second goal of the night, restoring LA’s lead and ultimately sealing all three points.
Real Salt Lake pushed for another equalizer in a frantic finish, but the Galaxy held firm through a lengthy spell of stoppage time to see out the result. The final whistle confirmed a valuable home victory for Greg Vanney’s side, built on Reus’ clinical finishing and enough resilience to withstand RSL’s possession-heavy approach.
Goals: Marco Reus 9′, JT Marcinkowski (own goal) 45’+4′, Marco Reus (penalty) 85′.
