Toluca took a significant step in their Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal on Wednesday night, beating LA Galaxy 4-2 in an entertaining first leg at Estadio Nemesio Díez Riega.

The hosts were the sharper side from the opening whistle and made their pressure count in the 12th minute, when Nicolás Castro (12′) opened the scoring to settle Toluca into the fixture. With Toluca dominating the ball and pinning the Galaxy deep, the second goal arrived just before the break through Paulinho (43′), giving the Liga MX side a deserved 2-0 halftime lead.

That first half advantage reflected the flow of the match. Toluca controlled 72.4 percent of possession overall, finished with 17 shots to LA Galaxy’s seven, and consistently found space in the final third. The visitors struggled to establish any rhythm, and Edwin Cerrillo’s yellow card in the 36th minute underlined a difficult evening in midfield.

To their credit, LA Galaxy did respond after halftime. Gabriel Pec (66′) pulled one back to give the MLS side hope, briefly shifting the momentum and asking a few questions of the home defense. But each time Galaxy threatened to turn the tie, Toluca had the answer.

That answer was Paulinho. The striker restored Toluca’s two-goal cushion in the 73rd minute with his second of the night, only for Marco Reus (77′) to strike back quickly and keep LA Galaxy alive at 3-2. For a few moments, the first leg felt delicately poised.

Then came the decisive blow. Paulinho (85′) completed his hat trick late on, putting real daylight between the sides and giving Toluca a two-goal advantage to protect going into the second leg. It was a clinical center-forward display, with Paulinho punishing LA Galaxy whenever the visitors left even the slightest opening.

There was still time for Bruno Méndez to go into the book in the 89th minute, but by then the result was beyond doubt. Toluca had done enough not only to win the match, but to put themselves in a strong position in the quarterfinal series.

For LA Galaxy, the two away goals from Pec and Reus offer at least a measure of encouragement. The tie is not over, and their second-half spell showed they can trouble Toluca. But after conceding four times and spending long stretches chasing the ball, the Galaxy will know they have left themselves with a steep climb in the return fixture.

Goal scorers: Nicolás Castro (12′), Paulinho (43′, 73′, 85′) for Toluca; Gabriel Pec (66′) and Marco Reus (77′) for LA Galaxy.
