Cruz Azul punched their ticket to the next round of the Concacaf Champions Cup on Tuesday night, earning a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Monterrey in the second leg of their Round of 16 fixture and advancing 4-3 on aggregate.

Monterrey made the sharper start at Estadio Cuauhtémoc and landed the first blow in the 8th minute. Jorge Rodríguez stepped up to put the visitors ahead, giving Rayados an early lift and briefly swinging the momentum of the tie. With the aggregate margin suddenly tight, Cruz Azul were forced to settle themselves and work their way back into the match.

The first half carried plenty of edge but no further goals. Monterrey picked up bookings for Carlos Frayde in the 29th minute and Víctor Guzmán in first-half stoppage time at 45+4′, while Gonzalo Piovi went into the book for Cruz Azul in the 37th minute. Monterrey took a 1-0 lead into the interval, with the tie still very much alive.

Whatever was said in the Cruz Azul dressing room had an immediate effect. Just one minute into the second half, José Paradela struck in the 46th minute to level the match at 1-1, restoring control of the aggregate picture for the home side and energizing the crowd.

From there, the fixture became a tense, physical contest. Jorge Rodarte was cautioned for Cruz Azul in the 51st minute, while Monterrey collected more yellow cards through Carlos Salcedo in the 57th minute and Rodríguez in the 59th minute. The visitors pushed for the goal that would have changed the tie, but Cruz Azul managed the moments well and stood up to the pressure.

Statistically, there was little to separate the sides. Cruz Azul held 50.8 percent of possession to Monterrey’s 49.2, and La Máquina finished with 16 shots and six on target, compared to Monterrey’s 14 attempts and four on target. Cruz Azul also held a 6-3 edge in corners, a sign of the pressure they were able to apply, especially after the break.

In the end, the draw was enough for Cruz Azul, and that was all that mattered. Monterrey won the opening stretch and threatened to turn the tie on its head, but Paradela’s 46th-minute goal proved decisive across the two legs. After a tense night and a legitimate share of the spoils on the scoreboard, Cruz Azul moved on with a 4-3 aggregate victory, while Monterrey were left to rue the chances they could not convert.
