Sporting CP produced a European night to remember in Lisbon, sweeping aside Bodo/Glimt 5-0 after extra time to book their place in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals with a 5-3 aggregate triumph.

Trailing in the tie coming into this Round of 16 second leg, Sporting were relentless from the opening whistle at Estádio José Alvalade. The home side dominated territory, pressed high, and kept Bodo/Glimt pinned deep for long stretches, finishing with a staggering 66 percent possession, 38 shots, 14 efforts on target, and 16 corners. It was the sort of siege that always felt likely to yield rewards; the only question was when the breakthrough would arrive.

That first goal came in the 34th minute, when Gonçalo Inacio rose to head Sporting in front at 1-0 on the night. It was a deserved lead and one that settled the hosts, whose circulation of the ball and intensity out of possession never allowed Bodo/Glimt much breathing room.

Sporting continued to dictate the match after the interval and doubled their advantage in the 61st minute through Pedro Gonçalves. At that point, the tie was alive with tension, but the Portuguese side had all the momentum and looked the more likely team to seize complete control.

The third goal arrived in the 78th minute, with Luis Suárez converting from the penalty spot to make it 3-0. That strike brought the aggregate score level and turned the atmosphere inside Alvalade electric, with Sporting sensing that Bodo/Glimt were beginning to crack under the weight of pressure.

Even so, the Norwegian visitors managed to drag the contest into extra time, where Sporting’s superior energy and attacking depth finally told. Just two minutes into the additional period, Maximiliano Araújo struck in the 92nd minute to put Sporting 4-0 ahead on the night and, crucially, in front in the tie for the first time.

From there, the home side never looked back. Bodo/Glimt, who had ridden their luck for long spells, could not stem the wave any longer. Sporting kept pushing, kept probing, and in the first minute of stoppage time at the end of extra time, Rafael Nel added the final flourish in the 120’+1′ minute to complete a thumping 5-0 victory.

It was a result built on control as much as conviction. Sporting’s four assists, territorial dominance, and sheer shot volume underlined just how comprehensive this performance was. Bodo/Glimt managed only nine shots and three on target across 120 minutes, rarely able to turn defensive resistance into sustained attacking threat.

For Sporting, this was the complete knockout display: patience in regulation, ruthlessness in the key moments, and composure once extra time arrived. Gonçalo Inacio set the tone in the 34th minute, Pedro Gonçalves added belief in the 61st, Luis Suárez held his nerve from the spot in the 78th, Maximiliano Araújo delivered the decisive blow in the 92nd, and Rafael Nel capped the night in the 120’+1′ minute.

On a dramatic Tuesday night in Lisbon, Sporting CP turned a difficult aggregate situation into a statement victory. The Lions are through to the quarterfinals, and they did it in unforgettable style.
