One goal proved enough to settle a playoff night at Snapdragon Stadium. Kiana Palacios struck in the 30th minute to give Utah Royals a 1–0 victory over San Diego Wave FC on Friday, November 6, sending the visitors into the NWSL semifinals and ending the hosts’ postseason run.
In front of 12,638 spectators, San Diego finished with more possession, more shots and more corners. But Utah delivered the decisive moment and kept a clean sheet through a goalless second half.
Palacios provides the breakthrough
Palacios put the Royals ahead on the half-hour mark, giving Utah a lead they would carry into the interval. Her 30th-minute goal ultimately separated the sides in a quarterfinal defined by the contrast between San Diego’s greater attacking volume and Utah’s efficiency.
The Royals registered eight attempts across the fixture, with two on target. Turning one of those into the only goal gave them the platform for a valuable away victory.
Wave’s statistical edge brings no equalizer
San Diego controlled 62.4% of possession and produced 16 shots, including five on target. Their 10–3 advantage in corners added another measure of their attacking pressure, but none of it yielded the equalizer.
Utah’s resistance held throughout the second half. Palacios received a yellow card in the 59th minute, followed by Kaleigh Riehl in the 67th, as the visitors continued protecting their narrow advantage.
The closing stages brought further bookings: San Diego’s Barbara Bonansea in the 90th minute, then Utah’s Miyabi Moriya and Ana Tejada in the third and fifth minutes of added time respectively. With the match clock reaching 90+8, the Royals still had their clean sheet—and their place in the next round.
Royals advance, Wave bow out
For San Diego, this was a painful reminder that territorial control and chances do not guarantee a playoff breakthrough. The Wave generated twice as many attempts as their opponents but could not find a way onto the scoresheet.
For Utah, the equation was simpler: Palacios’ 30th-minute winner, a clean sheet and a semifinal berth. On a night when the margins were narrow, the Royals made the decisive moment count.
