LAFC overturned a two-goal deficit to earn a 2–2 draw against LA Galaxy at BMO Stadium on Sunday, October 25, with a rapid second-half response turning the latest El Tráfico on its head.
Joseph Paintsil put the Galaxy ahead in the 34th minute and doubled their advantage in the 51st. But Denis Bouanga answered in the 53rd minute before Leo Walta equalized in the 62nd, ensuring the Major League Soccer rivals finished with a point apiece.
Paintsil puts Galaxy in command
Paintsil provided the first breakthrough in the 34th minute, giving the visitors a lead they carried into halftime. His second goal in the 51st minute left LAFC facing a demanding comeback and put the Galaxy within reach of an away derby victory.
That two-goal cushion, however, lasted just two minutes. Rather than allowing the visitors to consolidate their advantage, LAFC immediately cut the deficit through Bouanga’s 53rd-minute goal.
LAFC answer with a swift comeback
Bouanga’s intervention changed the direction of the contest, and Walta completed the recovery in the 62nd minute. In the space of nine minutes, LAFC had gone from two goals behind to level, leaving the fixture open again with nearly half an hour of regulation remaining.
The hosts finished with the stronger attacking numbers: 57.4 percent possession, 21 shots to the Galaxy’s 10 and a commanding 12–1 advantage in corners. Yet the shots-on-target count was much closer at 5–4, and LAFC could not turn their greater volume into a winning goal.
Ryan Porteous was booked for LAFC in the 55th minute, while the Galaxy’s Pablo Ruiz received a yellow card in the third minute of second-half stoppage time. There was no further breakthrough before the final whistle.
A point apiece, with contrasting emotions
For LAFC, the draw represented a recovery from a difficult position. For the Galaxy, Paintsil’s brace had created an opportunity to take all three points, only for their rivals to erase the advantage almost as quickly as it had been extended.
The Galaxy next face Austin FC on Saturday, October 31, at 2:00 p.m. PDT. LAFC return to action against Minnesota United FC on Sunday, November 1, at 5:30 p.m. PST.
