Galatasaray emerged from a dramatic UEFA Champions League fixture with a 4–2 victory over Lille at the Decathlon Arena – Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Wednesday, October 21. After an eventful first half ended level, the visitors struck twice in nine second-half minutes to settle a contest that had already swung in both directions.
Diaoune double turns the first half around
Yunus Akgün gave Galatasaray an immediate advantage with a goal in the second minute, but Lille needed only five minutes to respond. Soriba Diaoune equalised in the seventh minute, ensuring the visitors’ early lead was short-lived.
Diaoune then struck again in the 39th minute to put Lille 2–1 ahead. His brace had transformed the outlook for the hosts, who were suddenly within reach of taking a lead into the interval.
Galatasaray, however, had another answer. Alexey Batrakov headed home in the 44th minute to make it 2–2, wiping out Lille’s advantage just before the break and leaving the fixture finely balanced.
Two decisive blows after the interval
The balance shifted towards Galatasaray in the 52nd minute when Lille goalkeeper Berke Özer’s own goal put the visitors back in front. Having twice recovered from setbacks before half-time, Lille now faced another test of their resilience.
Victor Osimhen made that task considerably harder with Galatasaray’s fourth goal in the 61st minute. For the first time in the match, either side held a two-goal cushion — and this time there would be no reply.
Lille’s possession brings no reward
The hosts finished with 55.9% possession and 15 attempts to Galatasaray’s 10, while also edging the shots-on-target count 5–4. Those figures underline Lille’s involvement in the contest, but the visitors made the decisive moments count.
For Lille, Diaoune’s seventh- and 39th-minute goals were the standout contribution on a frustrating evening. For Galatasaray, the response to falling behind and the decisive second-half spell delivered all three points in the Champions League league phase.
