Brentford 3-0 Chelsea: Bees sting Blues with ruthless second-half derby display

Brentford delivered a statement London derby victory on Friday night, beating Chelsea 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium after a clinical and commanding second-half performance.

The sides could not be separated in a goalless first half, with Chelsea enjoying more of the ball but finding little reward for their territorial control. The visitors finished with 59.4% possession and won 12 corners, yet registered only two shots on target as Brentford remained organised, compact and increasingly dangerous whenever the match opened up.

The breakthrough arrived in the 61st minute. Jaidon Anthony rose to head Brentford into the lead, sparking a raucous response from the home support and changing the complexion of the fixture.

Chelsea pushed for a route back into the contest, but Brentford were far sharper in both penalty areas. The Bees had six shots on target from 13 attempts and made their pressure count again in the 83rd minute, when Igor Thiago doubled the advantage. The forward was booked a minute later, but his goal had already put Brentford firmly in control.

There was still time for a third in stoppage time. Substitute Fábio Carvalho struck in the 90+4th minute to complete an emphatic 3-0 win and put the seal on a night that will live long with the 17,193 in attendance.

It was a ruthless display from Brentford: patient without the ball, purposeful in transition and decisive when the key moments arrived. Chelsea’s greater possession and substantial corner count ultimately counted for nothing, with the Blues unable to turn their control into clear-cut opportunities.

The result continues the recent storyline around this derby: Brentford’s ability to punish Chelsea when chances come their way. The Bees next host Aston Villa on October 10, while Chelsea will look to respond away to AFC Bournemouth on the same day.

Goals

  • Brentford: Jaidon Anthony, 61′
