Austin FC 1-1 San Jose Earthquakes — Guilherme Biro delivered a dramatic late equalizer in the 96th minute as Austin FC salvaged a deserved point against the San Jose Earthquakes in Saturday’s MLS fixture at Q2 Stadium.
San Jose made the sharper start and took the lead in the eighth minute through Beau Leroux. The Earthquakes midfielder’s early goal put the visitors in control of the first half, with Austin heading into the interval trailing 1-0.
Austin steadily tilted the pitch in their favour after the restart. The Verde and Black finished with 52.5 percent possession, outshot San Jose 16-10 and created 13 shot assists to the visitors’ eight. Yet the Earthquakes remained organised and appeared on course to see out a valuable away victory.
The breakthrough finally arrived deep into added time. Guilherme Biro scored in the 90+6th minute to level the match and ignite Q2 Stadium, denying San Jose at the very end of a tense contest. Austin goalkeeper Brad Stuver was booked in the 87th minute, while San Jose’s Reid Roberts saw yellow in the 65th.
Both sides earned seven corners, but Austin’s late pressure ultimately paid off. The 1-1 draw extends Austin’s resilience at home, while San Jose will feel disappointment after protecting their early advantage for so long.
Austin FC return to action on Wednesday, September 9, against the Colorado Rapids. San Jose travel to face San Diego FC later that evening.
