WASHINGTON, D.C. — Paige Metayer delivered the decisive moment deep into first-half stoppage time as Washington Spirit edged Bay FC 1-0 at Audi Field on Sunday.

With the match seemingly headed into the interval goalless, Metayer found the breakthrough in the 45+4th minute. Her goal gave the Spirit a lead they protected through a tense, competitive second half to claim all three NWSL points.

The visitors had plenty of the ball and carried a genuine attacking threat, finishing with 52 percent possession, 19 shots and four efforts on target. Washington, however, matched Bay FC’s four shots on target while producing 17 attempts of their own, making the most important one count before the break.

Bay FC also earned seven corners to Washington’s five, but the Spirit’s defensive shape stood firm after halftime. The home side managed the closing stages despite mounting pressure, with Gabrielle Carle booked in the 79th minute as Washington dug in to preserve the clean sheet.

Metayer, who had received a yellow card in the 35th minute, turned her afternoon around with the match-winning goal. Bay FC substitute Maddie Moreau was shown a yellow card in the 88th minute as the visitors searched for a late equaliser that never arrived.

The result moves Washington Spirit’s record to 12-4-6, while Bay FC fall to 6-4-11. Washington next host Portland Thorns FC on September 6, while Bay FC return home to face Kansas City Current on September 4.
