Utah Royals produced a stunning second-half surge to overwhelm Portland Thorns FC 5-1 at America First Field on Sunday. After Sophia Wilson gave Portland an instant lead in the 1st minute, the Royals responded with five unanswered goals in front of 6,243 supporters in Sandy.
Portland’s early strike threatened to set the tone. Wilson found the net in the 1st minute, putting the visitors ahead before Utah had time to settle into the fixture. The Royals, however, gradually took control of the pitch and carried more of the possession, finishing with 57.1 percent.
Cece Delzer brought Utah level in the 35th minute, ensuring the sides went into the interval locked at 1-1. It was the beginning of a huge night for the Royals midfielder, who struck again only two minutes after the restart in the 47th minute to turn the match decisively in Utah’s favor.
With Portland chasing an equalizer, Utah were clinical in the final third. Brecken Mozingo extended the lead in the 68th minute, before Kiana Palacios added a fourth in the 79th minute. Kate Del Fava completed the emphatic victory with a header in the 89th minute.
The Royals’ attacking efficiency told the story: they converted five of their seven shots on target and registered five assists across their five goals. Portland had 11 attempts and put five on target, but could not find another way through after Wilson’s opener.
It was a statement home result for Utah, who transformed a difficult opening minute into a commanding five-goal display. For Portland, Wilson’s 1st-minute goal was an ideal start, but the Thorns were unable to withstand the Royals’ relentless second-half pressure.
