Seattle Reign FC struck twice in a ruthless first-half spell and rode out sustained pressure the rest of the way to claim a 2-0 National Women’s Soccer League victory over San Diego Wave FC on Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium.
The decisive moments arrived early. Maddie Mercado opened the scoring in the 17th minute, rising to finish a header that silenced the home crowd and gave Seattle an early foothold. Just three minutes later, Jordyn Bugg doubled the advantage with another header in the 20th minute, capping a devastating stretch that ultimately settled the fixture.
San Diego saw plenty of the ball after that and pushed hard to find a route back into the match. The Wave finished with 60.8 percent possession, won seven corners and fired 22 shots, including nine on target. But for all their territorial control and attacking volume, the final touch never arrived.
Seattle, meanwhile, were clinical when the key openings appeared. Reign finished with just 39.2 percent possession and nine total shots, but five were on target and the visitors made their first-half chances count. With a two-goal cushion in hand, Seattle managed the tempo well, stayed organized without the ball and protected the clean sheet through a scoreless second half.
The first half also carried a bit of edge. Phoebe McClernon was booked for Seattle in the 25th minute, and Mercado went into the referee’s notebook in first-half stoppage time at 45+2. San Diego’s Gia Corley was shown a yellow card in the 48th minute as the Wave tried to increase the intensity after the interval.
Despite San Diego’s pressure, Seattle never surrendered their grip on the result. The Wave could not turn their shot count or possession into a breakthrough, while the Reign’s back line held firm in a disciplined road display.
In the end, the opening 20 minutes told the story. Mercado’s goal in the 17th minute and Bugg’s in the 20th gave Seattle Reign FC a valuable away win, while San Diego Wave FC were left to rue a match in which they controlled long stretches but came away empty-handed.
Final score: San Diego Wave FC 0-2 Seattle Reign FC
