Washington Spirit did the hard work early and showed enough composure late to claim a 2-1 road victory over Boston Legacy FC in National Women’s Soccer League action on Sunday night at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
The Spirit arrived in strong form and played like it for much of the opening half, controlling 58.5 percent of possession and making their territorial advantage count with two well-timed goals before the interval. Boston, to its credit, found a response after the break and made the closing stages uncomfortable, but the late rally came up just short.
The breakthrough arrived in the 25th minute when Tara Rudd rose to score with a header, giving Washington a deserved 1-0 lead after a sharp spell of pressure. The visitors doubled the advantage just six minutes later as Trinity Rodman struck in the 31st minute, capping a clinical first-half sequence that left Boston chasing the fixture at 2-0 down.
That first-half margin told the story of the contest. Washington managed only seven total shots on the night, but they were efficient in the decisive moments and matched Boston with three shots on target. Boston actually finished with more attempts overall, 11 to 7, yet spent too much of the evening trying to break down a Spirit side that had already established control on the scoreboard.
Boston came out with better intent in the second half and gradually tilted the match back toward Washington’s penalty area. The hosts earned just one corner all evening, so clear-cut set-piece pressure was limited, but their willingness to keep probing gave them hope. Sammy Smith finally provided the breakthrough in the 88th minute, pulling one back and setting up a nervy finish for the visitors.
From there, the Spirit had to dig in. A yellow card for Deborah Abiodun in first-half stoppage time and another for Andi Sullivan in the 90+2nd minute reflected some of the edge in Washington’s performance, while Boston’s Bianca St-Georges was booked in the 53rd minute as the second half became more combative. Still, the Spirit managed the final moments well enough to see out the result and protect all three points.
For Washington, this was a mature away performance: not flawless, but efficient, disciplined for long stretches, and decisive when the openings came. Goals from Tara Rudd in the 25th minute and Trinity Rodman in the 31st minute were the difference. For Boston Legacy FC, Sammy Smith’s 88th-minute goal gave the home support something to believe in, yet the slow start proved too much to overcome.
The win strengthens Washington Spirit’s momentum, while Boston Legacy FC will look at the second-half push as a platform even in defeat. In front of an attendance of 10,101, this fixture ultimately turned on a ruthless first half from the visitors and a late surge from the hosts that arrived just a little too late.
