Angel City FC made their first-half edge count on Saturday night, earning a disciplined 2-0 National Women’s Soccer League victory over San Diego Wave FC at Snapdragon Stadium.
In front of 15,881 supporters in San Diego, the visitors absorbed pressure, took their chances ruthlessly, and walked away with all three points thanks to goals from Maiara Niehues in the 17th minute and Ary Borges in the 26th minute.
San Diego actually saw more of the ball and spent long stretches on the front foot, finishing with 63.1 percent possession, 18 total shots, 10 corners, and six efforts on target. But for all that territorial control, the Wave could not find a breakthrough against an Angel City side that stayed compact, defended its box well, and looked dangerous whenever space opened up in transition.
The tone was feisty early. Gia Corley went into the book for San Diego in the 5th minute, and Perle Morroni followed with a yellow card for Angel City in the 18th as the fixture quickly developed an edge.
Between those cautions came the opening goal. Angel City struck in the 17th minute when Maiara Niehues found the net with a header, giving the away side a valuable lead and quieting the home crowd. It was a reminder of how clinical visitors can be when presented with a clear sight of goal.
Angel City doubled the advantage in the 26th minute through Ary Borges, whose finish put San Diego in a deeper hole before the half-hour mark. At 2-0 down, the Wave were left chasing the match despite controlling large portions of the ball.
The visitors took that two-goal cushion into the interval, and the second half became a test of game management as much as anything else. San Diego pushed, probed, and tried to generate momentum from wide areas and set pieces, but Angel City never lost control of the overall rhythm. The away side finished with 12 shots and four on target, doing enough in key moments even without dominating possession.
There was still plenty of bite after the restart. Sveindís Jónsdóttir was shown a yellow card in the 44th minute just before the break, and Evelyn Shores entered the referee’s book in the 81st minute as Angel City protected their lead with determination.
For San Diego, the frustration will come from the stat line as much as the result. Ten corners and six shots on target usually provide a platform to get back into a match, but the finishing touch never arrived. For Angel City, this was the kind of away performance managers love: efficient in front of goal, organized without the ball, and mature enough to see out the second half without letting the contest slip.
By full time, the story was straightforward. Angel City built the win in a sharp first half, with Maiara Niehues scoring in the 17th minute and Ary Borges adding the second in the 26th minute, then defended the advantage the rest of the way to leave San Diego with a 2-0 defeat on home pitch.
