Gotham FC turned a brief setback into a commanding Friday night result, coming from behind to beat the Utah Royals 3-1 at America First Field in the National Women’s Soccer League.
Utah struck first in the 23rd minute when Cece Delzer found the breakthrough, giving the home side a lift and briefly putting Gotham on the back foot. But the visitors responded with the kind of composure top sides rely on away from home, flipping the match before the interval and then finishing the job in the second half.
Esther González equalized for Gotham in the 26th minute from the penalty spot, restoring parity almost immediately after Utah’s opener. That quick response changed the rhythm of the fixture, with Gotham beginning to see more of the ball and impose greater control across midfield. The visitors ended the night with 54.6 percent possession, while both sides finished with 12 total shots.
The decisive first-half moment arrived deep into stoppage time. Tierna Davidson put Gotham ahead in the 45’+5′ minute, a major blow for the Royals after they had worked hard to stay level following the penalty. Instead of going into the dressing room at 1-1, Utah found itself trailing 2-1 after a punishing end to the half.
That halftime edge allowed Gotham to manage the second period with far more authority. Utah still threatened and actually put seven shots on target over the course of the match, but Gotham remained efficient in key moments. The visitors had five efforts on target and made the more clinical contributions count where it mattered most.
González delivered the knockout blow in the 70th minute, grabbing her second goal of the night to stretch Gotham’s lead to 3-1. From there, the visitors were able to see out the final stages with increasing comfort, even as the match retained its edge physically. Utah committed 12 fouls to Gotham’s 10, and the card count reflected the tension, with Jaelin Howell, Midge Purce, Kate Del Fava, Cloé Lacasse and Dayana Pierre-Louis all booked.
For Utah, the result will sting because the opening phase suggested there was something to build on after Delzer’s 23rd-minute goal. But conceding once almost instantly and then again in first-half stoppage time left the Royals chasing the match. Gotham, by contrast, showed the ruthlessness of a side capable of turning momentum quickly and protecting an advantage on the road.
In the end, the key moments told the story: Cece Delzer in the 23rd minute for Utah, then Esther González in the 26th minute and 70th minute, with Tierna Davidson striking in the 45’+5′ minute to bridge the two halves. Gotham left Sandy with all three points and a polished 3-1 away victory.
