North Carolina Courage left Los Angeles with all three points on Sunday night, overturning a halftime deadlock to beat Angel City FC 2-1 at BMO Stadium in the National Women’s Soccer League.

After a first half short on cutting edge but not intensity, the fixture came to life immediately after the interval. Angel City thought they had seized control when Evelyn Ijeh fired the hosts in front in the 48th minute, rewarding a bright start to the second half and lifting the home crowd of 16,057.

But the Courage response was swift and decisive. Just three minutes later, Maiara Niehues brought North Carolina level with a header in the 51st minute, changing the rhythm of the match and silencing the momentum Angel City had briefly built.

That equaliser opened the contest up. Angel City still saw plenty of the ball, finishing with 52.6 percent possession, and they asked questions with 17 total shots and five on target. North Carolina, though, were more efficient in the key moments, turning four shots on target into two crucial goals and showing a sharper edge in transition.

With the match moving toward a tense finish, the visitors found the decisive breakthrough in the 79th minute. Manaka Matsukubo struck what proved to be the winner, capping a clinical second-half display from the Courage and handing Angel City a damaging home defeat.

The first half had ended 0-0, though there was an early warning sign for the visitors when Uno Shiragaki went into the book in the 3rd minute. From there, both sides settled into a competitive midfield battle, with Angel City generating the greater volume of chances but unable to make the pressure count before the break.

Once the goals arrived, the fixture developed into exactly the kind of open, transitional contest North Carolina were happy to play. Angel City pushed for a late response, winning five corners and producing 15 shot assists across the night, but the Courage held firm to preserve the lead through a lengthy 13 minutes of stoppage time.

For North Carolina, the result moves them to 4-3-3 on the season and gives them an important bounce-back road win. For Angel City, now 4-1-5, this was another frustrating evening in a match where the underlying pressure did not translate into the result they wanted.
