Nottingham Forest left it late, but Elliot Anderson’s 88th-minute goal secured a deserved 1-1 Premier League draw with Newcastle United at the City Ground on Sunday.

After a goalless first half, the fixture finally sprang to life in the closing stages. Harvey Barnes looked to have won it for Newcastle when he struck in the 74th minute, only for Forest to respond with real conviction and find a leveller through Anderson two minutes from time.

It was a result that reflected a closely fought contest in Nottingham. Newcastle edged possession with 54.4 percent and matched Forest shot for shot in terms of threat, finishing with 16 attempts and six on target. Forest, though, were every bit as competitive, registering 17 shots and six on target of their own, and their persistence was rewarded late on.

The first half was short on goals but not on intensity. Forest worked aggressively out of possession and tried to unsettle Newcastle’s rhythm, while the visitors looked to control the tempo in midfield without quite finding the final pass. The interval arrived with the match still finely balanced at 0-0.

Forest’s combative approach was reflected in two early second-half cautions, with Igor Jesus shown a yellow card in the 49th minute and Ryan Yates booked in the 54th. Even so, the home side continued to push, and the contest remained open from end to end.

Newcastle eventually found the breakthrough in the 74th minute when Harvey Barnes applied the finish to put the visitors 1-0 up. With time running down, that goal appeared set to settle the fixture and hand Newcastle a valuable away victory.

But Forest refused to let the match drift away. Roared on by a crowd of 30,691 at the City Ground, the home side kept committing bodies forward and finally found their moment in the 88th minute, when Elliot Anderson struck to make it 1-1 and spark celebrations around the ground.

In the end, a draw felt like a fair outcome. Forest showed resilience and attacking intent to rescue a point, while Newcastle will regret not seeing out the lead after Barnes’ well-taken goal. For the neutral, it was a reminder that even a cagey Premier League fixture can burst into life late on.

Goal scorers: Harvey Barnes 74′ (Newcastle United), Elliot Anderson 88′ (Nottingham Forest).
