CF Montréal left it late, then made it emphatic.

For more than 90 minutes at Stade Saputo on Saturday, the Major League Soccer fixture with Orlando City SC had the feel of a goalless draw. Montréal controlled long stretches, asked more questions in the final third, and piled up pressure with 23 shots and 11 corners, but Orlando continued to hang in. Then, deep into stoppage time, the home side finally found the breakthrough and never looked back.

Daniel Ríos broke the deadlock from the penalty spot at 90’+4′, calmly converting to put CF Montréal in front after a match that had threatened to end in frustration for the hosts. With Orlando forced to push forward in search of an instant response, Montréal found more space on the counter and delivered the knockout blow moments later, when Dagur Thórhallsson struck at 90’+8′ to wrap up a 2-0 victory.

The final scoreline reflected the balance of the match. Montréal held a slight edge in possession at 53 percent, but the more telling numbers came in attacking output: 23 total shots to Orlando’s eight, and five efforts on target to the visitors’ three. The home side also earned 11 corners, repeatedly pinning Orlando back and forcing the away defence to absorb wave after wave of pressure.

For long stretches, however, Orlando City SC looked on course to take a point home from Montreal. The visitors stayed compact and disciplined for much of the contest, even if their physical approach was reflected in 16 fouls committed. Eduard Atuesta went into the book in the 62nd minute, and Iago Teodoro was shown a yellow card at 90’+6′ as the tension rose late on.

At 0-0 heading into the interval, there was little to separate the sides on the scoreboard, even if Montréal already looked the more purposeful side. The second half followed a similar pattern, with the home team probing and Orlando trying to stay organized, but it took until the closing moments for the breakthrough to arrive.

Once Ríos converted his penalty at 90’+4′, the fixture changed instantly. Orlando’s resistance had been broken, and Thórhallsson’s goal at 90’+8′ added gloss to the result and ensured the final whistle arrived with Stade Saputo in full voice.

It was a dramatic finish and a valuable three points for CF Montréal, who turned territorial control into a deserved result just before time ran out. Orlando City SC, by contrast, will rue allowing the match to slip away so late after battling hard to keep the hosts at bay for almost the entire evening.

Goal scorers: Daniel Ríos 90’+4′ (penalty), Dagur Thórhallsson 90’+8′.
